The peculiarity of storage of sunflower seeds is due to the fact that the uneven moisture content coming from combines, due to the high intensity of breathing, quickly self-heating. If the color, smell and purity of the seeds do not change at a temperature of the sunflower grain to 20 – 25 ° С, then with its growth, due to intense breathing and active development of the microflora, the seeds gradually lose their luster, cover it with mildew, bitter and thus become defective. And when the temperature rises to + 55 ° C and even higher, as a result of activation of thermophilic bacteria and as a result of developing processes, the defect of the seed is 100%.
Sunflower seeds are well preserved in a regulated gas environment, provided that oxygen is about 1%, carbon dioxide – about 1.5 – 2%, and the rest – nitrogen. Hydrolytic processes do not stop there, but their intensity is lower, and due to these conditions, seeds with a moisture content of 8% and a temperature of 5 – 10 ° C can be stored without damage for 4 months.
